Frankland Estate Spatburg(DOWN)under 2021

93 POINTS: Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

Clever play on words here as Spatburgunder is the German equivalent of Pinot Noir. A little Aussie touch and up pops this neat name. It was unfined and unfiltered with the fruit off the Old Kent River vineyard now in new hands. It was partially whole bunch fermented accentuating the quite beautiful fruit characters. It’s light bodied but packs plenty of power with a structure that is anything but whimpish. Sweet cherry and earthen floor nuances with the oak expertly managed.

"Cherries – black and red, earthy and nutty, a little dark spice and thyme. It’s savoury, spicy and nutty, with gentle grip to tannin, a subtle sappy freshness, even some strawberry, and a finish of good length. Has character, and I like it."
